Jane Austen "Sense and Sensibility"

When we talk about English classical literature, one of the first names that appears as a Victorian portrait in vivid colours is the one of Jane Austen. Her novels are timeless pieces of classical examples and style, they lead us to have a closer look to the English society, manners, habits and social norms and restrictions in the Victorian epoch on the verge of the new realism in literature.
"The more I know of the world, the more I am convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love. I require so much!”
“I wish, as well as everybody else, to be perfectly happy; but, like everybody else, it must be in my own way.”
“It is not what we think or feel that makes us who we are. It is what we do. Or fail to do...”

The novel “Sense and Sensibility” was published in 1811, it is one of the works that continue to have admirations for the witty and picturesque style of Jane Austen, the way she depicts her characters.

Each of them look so unique, and each has some specific treats. Her main heroine – Elinor Dashwood, and Marianne Dashwood she puts effort to show their character, moods, feelings and changes with more depth. That’s why they look much more realistic, serious and charming, than all other characters of the menagerie. Most of the time they are completely clear, and revealed under the light of virtues. While the ledest daughter – Elinor Dashwood has amazing sense of reflection and observation on others, and she is always reasonable, looking to others through the eyes of mind. While her younger sister, Margarette embodies all spontaneousness and high sesnitivity of a girl with her various mood swings and emotions.
We could say both characters are contrasting and that’s exactly the aim of the author– to let us feel how different are the sense and sensibility, and how both are connected in the nature of woman.
The focus of Jane is specially the emotional world and colourful landscape of the women`s heart, longing and desires.

All feelings and thoughts are interconnected like a spirals, they go from expectations, suspicions, sadness and grief, to joy, love, ecstasy and hopes.
All that kaleidoscope of feelings and emotions, inner dialogues and social circles, makes us involved in the magical world. Closed and charming. But also a world of intrigues, hypocrisy and parody.

Other male characters are viewed mostly from the eyes of the heroines feelings, doubts and thoughts about them.
They reveal themselves from the reactions, behaviours and shades of feelings that they show, but also by situations among social circles and friends.

Jane Austen:
The writer was born on 16. December 1775, she lived in Steventon, Hampshir, in a family house, where most of her life went, she also received big part of domestic education and taste to literature from her father.

Her works are filled with ironical notes and parody over the romantic mannerism and sentimentalism. That’s why she became closer to the new realism in literature in the beginning of 19 th century.

Her characters are depicted with sense of irony and humour, especially featuring their manner of social engagements and connectedness, and the need to gossip about others relations.
